Take a turn away from the main street into a side alley, jumbled with small shops, good food, and tasty sake! - This is "Yokocho!"
Yokocho streets have plenty of history and nostalgic atmosphere, which makes them popular destinations to visitors. 'Golden-Gai' in Shinjuku and 'Yameya-Yokocho' in Ueno are two famous ones, but there are many other exciting Yokocho-streets to be found in Tokyo as well!
Representative of the Shibuya area is 'Nonbei-Yokocho,' located right by the Shibuya Crossing.
Since way back this street has been home to many unique bars and is known as an atmospheric hideaway at the center of the city. Lately new Yokocho's, such as 'Shibuya-Niku(meat)-Yokocho,' 'Shibuya-Yokocho/RAYARD MIYASHITA PARK,' and 'CHAOS KITCHEN,' has popped up as well.
Next time in Shibuya, make sure to step away from the main street and into the Yokocho streets, you are sure to find something you like!
