"Tori no Ichi" is a traditional event held at bird-related shrines such as the Washi shrine and Otori shrine. In November, on the day of the rooster, this festival is held to wish for good luck and prosperity during the coming year.
One of the must-get-items is a so-called "Kuma-no-te."
Kuma-no-te, literally meaning bear paw, is actually what you call a rake due to it looking like a bear's paw. These are sold as lucky charms, and it is believed that one will help you rake in money and good luck.
According to tradition, you should upgrade your kuma-no-te with a bigger one every year so make sure to start small!
There are more hidden rules! You are also supposed to haggle down the price and then give the money you "earned" back to the shop owner!
At Miyamasumitake shrine, nearby SEIBU Shibuya store, they arrange a Tori no Ichi as well! It is right by the Shibuya crossing so make sure to stop by next time you're visiting Japan in November!
